Extractions
Tooth loss is very prevalent in America. It is estimated that 3 out of every 4 people is missing at least one tooth, with one out of five people missing all of their teeth.
When you are missing multiple teeth, your situation can start to feel hopeless; however, you should know that there are excellent solutions for restoring even an entire arch of missing teeth, and Ocean Smiles can help!
Why Do I Need an Extraction?
There are a few common situations that may necessitate the need for an extraction. They are:
- Tooth loss due to periodontal disease – This condition is an infection of the bone and soft tissues that support your teeth, and it is the number one cause of tooth loss in American adults.
- Wisdom teeth – also known as third molars, wisdom teeth may cause crowding or infection due to impaction, and it is typically recommended that they be removed.
- Orthodontic treatment – patients who suffer from crowding or overlapping of their teeth may benefit from having certain teeth extracted prior to orthodontic treatment. In some cases, tooth removal will help the treatment proceed more effectively and efficiently.
- Heavy damage or decay – A tooth that is decayed, infected, or damaged beyond repair or preservation with a root canal.
Will My Extraction Hurt?
Your comfort and well being are a top priority to your team at Ocean Smiles Family Dentistry. Dr. Chen is highly skilled, and he uses top-of-the-line dental anesthetics to ensure that you don’t feel anything during your procedure.
Most patients are surprised that an extraction is a much easier process than they thought.
What Is the Recovery Process?
Our team is also here to guide you through your recovery process, and Dr. Chen will provide a prescription with any necessary medications for your discomfort. It is normal to feel tenderness in the first days after your extraction, and you should plan to rest immediately after your procedure.
You can take the pain medication as needed and contact us if you experience any excessive pain or swelling after the first few days of your recovery. Most patients are able to go back to work and resume normal activities 1 to 2 days after their extraction.
